An Awesome Day at Newport

From the photos it looks like you’re having such a wonderful time. I’m envious.

You might not have been able to see that many mansions.  Most are probably set back off the street quite a ways and they’re spread out making it difficult to get to and see.

"Komal, it's 7:35 AM!" Jackie exclaimed. First I panicked and then sprang out my bed to see if Andrea was awake. After nearly banging on her door, I hurried to get ready.

We were expected to be at the Vartan-Gregorian Quad by 8:00 AM on Saturday morning for the Newport trip. Now, we only had 25 minutes to get ready, eat breakfast, and walk to our destination. Hastily, we got ready, met with Andrea, and speed walked to the location of the buses. We decided to have breakfast in Newport.

When we arrived at the Vartan-Gregorian Quad, we saw a huge assembly of people. Soon the buses arrived and we boarded them for a thrilling day.

An hour later, we arrived in the beautiful city of Newport. We were dropped by the Bowen Wharf and instructed to return there by 4:00 PM.

The first thing we decided to do was have breakfast. After a ten minute walk led by Jackie, we entered the Mad Hatter Bakery, the best bakery in town according to TripAdvisor. I purchased a mocka cupcake, a blueberry muffin, and a bottle of water. After enjoying a yummy breakfast, we headed out to explore the city of Newport.

In Newport, the streets were lined with numerous small shops and boutiques. Newport is great place to shop, however the prices are a little too expensive. Jackie, Andrea, and I went to many shops and bought some goods and souvenirs. We had a lot of fun walking, shopping, and meeting new people in Newport.

Later when our tummies grumbled, we decided to have lunch. We went to a pizzeria called Via Via Pizza. Lunch was fulfilling and delicious.

Although we really wanted to see the famous mansions of Newport, we were short on time. After getting a confusing variety of directions, we decided to drop the idea for today and to see the mansions some other day.  I was quite disappointed because I really wanted to see the renowned mansions, however I was hopeful that I might get an opportunity to go later with the rest of my cohort and friends.

With the time left, we returned to Bowen Wharf and explored the water side. Time flied by quickly and soon it was time to leave Newport and head back to Providence.

After arriving in Providence, my friends decided to get ready for the campus dance. On the other hand, I was excited to meet and welcome my friends from the Bay Area.

After Andrea and Jackie left, I walked to the Grad Center to meet with the rest of the girls and Ms. Neal. Excitedly, I started telling them all about Brown. They shared their traveling experience and how everything has been so far.

Then, we went to Kabob and Curry to have dinner. I ordered Malai Kofta and Garlic Naan. I absolutely enjoyed the dinner. Eating there reminded me of home and my mom's delicious cooking.

Soon we departed for our dorms. After an awesome day, I went to sleep with great plans for the future.

La Practice Blog Day

Day at Pinole
This morning I woke up around 8:00 AM, I thought I woke up very early so I didn't get up right away. I was careless and let myself fall asleep again, Luckily I always set up two alarms when I know I have to wake up early for something important. Sure enough my second alarm rang at 8:30 AM. I snoozed it but took a look at the time and jumped out of bed and into the shower to get ready for today's important event, Learning how to write a blog properly for the Ivy League Connection (ILC). Once i got ready I hurried to wake up my mother and ask her for a ride, she woke up and got ready herself. meanwhile I took advantage of this and ate a little bit of breakfast. Once she was ready to go I grabbed my book and all that I needed and went to the car.

Don Hard at Work
Upon arrival there were people already outside the library. I read some of the book I brought and waited outside the library because it was closed. Don got here fifteen minutes early. Once we got in the library we got right to work and we learned a lot from what Don was saying. He gave us the information we needed and warned us of negative things that could happen and of mistakes students had made before us. He followed this up with example of blogs written by students before us, great blogs and blogs that needed a lot of improvements. Then we got to work ourselves, we made a practice blog and worked on it step by step. We first began with the formatting, the content could be whatever we desired it to be. Secondly we learned about pictures, and how to take them and edit them to make it better. Thirdly we went out and took pictures and had some fun and relaxed. Finally we learned how to go from saving them into our computers to uploading them to our blogs properly.

For Chicago, it's Time to Free Kris Bryant

The front of the Pinole Library
The Chicago Cubs, a 106-year laughing stock of a team that hasn't won a championship since 1908, is on the verge of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.  This past winter, the Cubbies made big-time moves, stealing away the veteran manager of the Tampa Bay Rays in Joe Maddon and signing three-time All-Star pitcher Jon Lester, as well as vital role players in the speedster Dexter Fowler, former National League Rookie of the Year, Chris Coghlan, and lefty-specialist Travis Wood.  The Cubs have also put themselves in   a position to have a great future as well, drafting up-and-comers such as Jorge Soler, Addison Russell, Arismendy Alcantara, and Javier Baez, all who are in the Top 100 of their respective Draft Classes and all who are poised to become Big League superstars.  The Cubbies are on the up-and-up, especially because they also have a kid waiting in the wings by the name of Kris Bryant.

The parking lot of the Pinole Library
In short, Kris Bryant is a monster at the plate, a true testament to the Chicago Cubs front office and their ability to draft.  As the second overall pick in the 2013 Major League Draft, Bryant tore it up in 2014, batting .325, slugging 43 homers, and driving in 110 runs.  In Spring Training, Bryant proved to everyone that the hype was real, batting an unreal .425 and hitting nine homers in just 40 at-bats.  But even with his incredible spring and 2014 campaign, Chicago Cubs general manager Theo Epstein has elected to keep Bryant in the minor leagues in order to keep him locked up until the year 2021 instead of allowing him to enter arbitration in 2020.  Bryant isn't the only person to fall victim to the process of being held back.  Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Gregory Polanco and was held back at the beginning of their teams' 2014 season in order to be held on for an additional couple of years.

Contractually, this is a smart move by Epstein.  By locking up Bryant for an additional year, not only does he get that extra year on Bryant's contract, but it saves him a year's salary, which could in turn give the Cubbies a little spending money to blow on whoever hits the free market by 2020.  The problem is that Cubs fans are impatient; there have been four generations of Cubs fans since the last time they won it all and they're anxious.  The south side faithful don't want to wait another month for the phenomenon; they want him now.  If they struggle, these next couple of games could come back to haunt the Cubs 2015 playoff push in October and it may very well come down to Epstein's decision to not sign Bryant.  Fans can only wait and pray that the Cubs made the right move in keeping Bryant down yet again.

Blogging In The Big Blue Chair At The Pinole Library

Outside The Library
The chair that I am sitting in is fairly comfortable. It is blue with wooden legs and a stuffed back. It is square and big. Each table has four chairs around it. There are about fifteen tables that I can see from where I am standing. There are about sixty chairs that I can see. Most of the chairs are empty. There is a woman with a stroller sitting in one chair typing on a computer. I see another lady with long straight black hair sitting with her back to me. She is reading a book to another woman sitting across from her.
Inside The Library

The library was quiet but a baby started crying. The noise is filling the room with loud screams and sobs. I can hear the sounds of people flipping through books. They are quickly scanning the pages deciding if they want to check the book out and fully explore the pages. I can hear the noise of typing. Keys are being pressed frantically by finger moving up and down on a keyboard. My computer is humming.

There are bright lights on the ceiling. They are hanging from wires in rows all around the square room. To the right there is a light that is flickering. It turns on and off casting shadows on the wall around it. The wall is made of bricks. They are a light brownish beige color. There is a rim under the bricks. It is painted purple. The ends of the shelves and the carpets are also varying shades of purple.

First-World Problems

We are currrently struggling with WiFi connection. This is rather inconvienient as this problem has caused us to lose time. I am currently writing for naught just to fill in my space so I can demonstrate the proper protocol for blogging. It is cold in this room. Please enjoy my haiku on the struggles of first world technology:

Oh, sweet computer,
I just want to browse the web
But you prevent me......

Long Live the Dustbowl

It has now been about 16 months since it has last rained and there seems to be no end in sight. The government has begun providing everyone with respirators, children and women where the first to get there’s. Timmy is growing up fast, he is almost about to turn six in May.  It saddens me that Timmy has to grow up in this in these conditions.  Your father and I have been considering moving to California, we heard there’s great farming land there. And it’s better than the situation here.

The Afternoon Crew

The Afternoon Crew

My Day

Today I woke up at 9 AM. I knew the ILC tutorial was today, and I really did not want to be late. However I stayed in bed, and the only thing that motivated me to get up was when my younger sister said my dad brought tacos.

I ate then I went to my room to get ready. I put on some music to wake me up. I finally got ready.

The ride felt long. Even though it was just fifteen minutes. When I got there I was happy that I came on time.

Don is More Than the Best! He's Awesome!

The one and only, Don Gosney.
He's thinking about all the kids
that are going to college because
of his work in the Ivy League
Connection Program.
The Ivy League Connection program is a spectacular program for students who want to push their limits and challenge themselves. With this outstanding program students are able to broaden their perspectives and expand their horizons through the various courses it offers. Having academic and financial support from various prestigious schools from around the East Coast, students are able to challenge themselves through the different courses it offers varying from psychology, science, and math.

The Ivy  League Connections Program would not be anywhere it is without it's biggest and most important supporter, Don Gosney. This determined warrior allows this program survive at its most vulnerable times. Having to deal with rowdy high school students from various schools throughout the West Contra Costa School Districts and his motivation to fight for the program's survival, shows his true dedication to this program. His endless efforts in being part of this program has allowed a numerous amount of students to challenge themselves and have an opportunity to succeed. This is shown by the fact that Ivy League Connection alumni tend to carry on to applying or going to schools from the East Coast. If it wasn't for Don Gosney I wouldn't be in this program going to Cornell's summer program in the east coast and I wouldn't be in this exact room in Deanza High School writing a blog about how amazing he is at what he does. Instead I would be at home doing something useless. Thanks to Don Gosney I am going to experience an amazing opportunity that will expand my horizon and change me for the better.

Abstract Shenanigan-ish... "Stuff"

You know, just an amaetur photographic photo
Red Vines have gone purple... From Great Vines to Grape Vines? What a mystery I suppose. Where have the vines gone? What has happened to the food? Food is delicious. Food is great. This is weird. I have no idea where the meaning of this is going. I did hear Uptown Funk on my way back from the restroom. "Don't believe me, just watch!"

Yeah. Maybe this blog represents abstract art in the form of writing. This is the new art. The new abstract. This seems like a legitimate source of something that someone a Tumblr-er (does that even make sense?) would use to find a "unique" or "cool" or "inspirational" quote. Have Tumblrs found their pot of gold? Maybe not because this is about food. And abstract art. In the form of writigng. Blogging actually. Maybe this is Abstract food blogging. Wait.....!!! Mindblown... Yeah it's that dramatic! And Great Vines This blog was about that too. Actually, Grape Vines. Maybe it's none of the above. What is the meaning of this? Of life? Whoa, there you go... "Tumblr-er"-ers.

Nature from a lower angle highlights the essence of plants' chlorophyll... mind = blown

This is so terrible. I just realized that Great Vines aren't even the name of a brand of candy snacks. It is, however, the name of a step that is performed in my Jazz Dance class at school. Whoa. Wow. Hone your vocabulary skills, folks, cause "whoa" and "wow" are completely different. That is the lesson of today: differentiation. Have a great day. This was awesome. Not. Okay, I'll stop. Yeah...

Another angle-defying one. Justeen manifesting
the power of the sun. Deep..

Don't mind me.
Just taking a picture real quickly.

It's basically a long phrase that is used to fill up a space with text. It's known as the "dummy text", and can be used to show a text may look like, without actually having to think of what to type. Most of the time, it's human nature to skim over things that have a lot of words, so Lorem Ipsum is the perfect tool to use.

A beautiful day at De Anza High School.

What to Write?

Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.  Water is good.

Water gives you fabulous skin. Who doesn’t want that?  Water gives you fabulous skin. Who doesn’t want that? Water gives you fabulous skin. Who doesn’t want that? Water gives you fabulous skin. Who doesn’t want that?  Water gives you fabulous skin. Who doesn’t want that?  Water gives you fabulous skin. Who doesn’t want that?

What should I write? My brain is dead and that makes me sad.

Practice Makes Perfect

Another good title for this post could be "Hummd May Be Horrible At Original Post Titles." However, in theatre we are always encouraged to show, not tell. The point of this practice blog is to show Don that I can listen to instructions. I believe that I can. We also need to prove that we can insert pictures, since pictures would grab the attention of a potential reader.
Gabi is so artsy.
 Appreciate the aesthetic of her
 blond hair against the brick.
 How fabulous.
I am dressed very comfortably. I am wearing three rings on my fingers. One of them is shaped like a seahorse. The nails on my left hand are painted, but I was in a bit of a rush this morning, so I completely forgot to paint the nails on my right hand. I don't think that anyone would notice, but now that I posted this on the practice blog, the world will know. Oh well.

I'm very proud of the height of my jump here.
 Justeen and Aisha can't compare.
I think that I will start writing about the things around me so that I can fill up space. Gabi and Aisha are sitting on either side of me. Aisha is typing really quickly and Gabi is mouthing the words that she is typing. I don't think that she knows that she is doing that. Aisha is laughing over what she is typing, so I am kind of tempted to read it now. It is a beautiful story and I encourage you to go and find it.

A Very Very Un-Unique Practice Blog Title

"HHHahahhahhah" -Aisha Asif
At 2:18 PM I am writing the time with correct formatting. I am writing. I am writing more. I am creating. I am an author. I am a blogger. I am a wordsmith. I am using "I" to start every sentence. I will now share all the tongue twisters I know.

"Will You Marry Me?" -Hummd Alikhan
She sells seashells by the seashore. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? The big, blue, beautiful, blue balloon burst. You know you need unique New York, unique New York you know you need! Any noise annoys an oyster, but a noisy noise annoys an oyster most.
This needs no caption.
How about some jokes? Just kidding, I can't think of any.

Don is the Most Best

"The All and Powerful G"
It is Saturday afternoon and I am currently sitting in De Anza High School's computer lab for the Ivy League Connection 101 course. Don has taken time out of his day to help the ILC applicants perform to their highest capability. I am typing this paragraph to test out the new blogging skills that Don has just taught us. If I say so myself, I am doing a pretty good job. I am trying to fill this paragraph up with a a lot of words to make Don happy.

The Ivy League Connection is an opportunity that gives students a chance to spend their time undertaking a course at some of the most prestigious universities in the United States of America. We are expected to be on our best behavior and exert our full effort. We will need to work as a team to reach higher goals faster and with more efficiency. We are expected to respect and follow those in command.

The Ivy League connection will need us to work responsibly and mature as adults. But they wont leave us on our own just yet. Volunteers and supervisors are available to guide us on the right path. I understand that they are doing this out of their own time and want to help us in any way they can. I cant wait for this summer, I am so excited!

Butterflies are Awesome

Yesterday I saw a butterfly. It was really pretty. It was blue and pink. It was flying and flapping it's wings. It reminded me of a cat. P.S. I hate cats. Anyway it reminded me of a cat because it looked like a cat.

That butterfly made me question my life decisions. It made me think of  who I really am. What am I? How I am I alive? Are we all aliens? What is life? Do I have money for the bus? Do I want an oreo shake or a sundae?

Then I saw a cat chasing the butterfly that looked like a cat. I was so focused on the butterfly that looked like a cat and was being chased by a cat that I dropped my phone. My heart dropped. As the phone dropped to the ground and its screen shattered into pieces, I felt my heart being torn apart.

Just kidding I don't really care about my phone. It is actually kind of annoying. It keeps doing this weird thing where it doesn't work anymore and I have to send it back to the phone people. At least it is better than my last phone which didn't even have a front camera. My dad says I don't deserve a good phone since I broke my last four, which was not my fault. Universe just doesn't want me to get a phone. Then I ate pancakes.

Me right now......

The Battle Begins

Having the time of my life
The enemy has left. Our team is infiltrating the building. The morning team looks like they had a blast at 8:30 AM, but team afternoon is taking over.

From snooping around other posts and drafts, I have found that the morning group dealt with several problems. Their matters ranged from the cold morning breeze to the frightening loss of internet. Although the chill has been replaced with a balmy sun, our group is still experiencing issues getting up on the line.

Despite their problems, their kitten journals and yam haikus show that their mornings were anything but dreary. Yet keep your eyes out, team morning. The afternoon blogs are coming out and, if you don’t mind, we’ll be taking the spotlight!

Now I shall proceed to create the most inspiring soliloquy humankind has ever produced.

Brace yourself this season, but not for the flowers. It’s an issue which reaches above allergies and showers. The problem, a big one may I add, goes something like this:

Prom, testing, testing, testing, prom, prom, prom, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, prom, prom, prom, testing, prom, testing, testing, prom, prom, testing, testing, testing, prom, prom, prom, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, prom, prom, prom, testing, prom, testing, testing, prom, prom, testing, testing, testing, prom, prom, prom, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, prom, prom, prom, prom, prom, prom, testing, prom, testing, testing, prom, prom, testing, testing, testing, prom, prom, prom, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, testing, prom, testing, testing, prom.

Struggle is too real

Why Don should be a Superhero.

The thing that differentiates him from the other superheroes is his uniform. Don is in love with is aloha shirts that have really nice designs, with flowers, leaves, and more flowers and leaves.

If Don was part of the superhero crew, he would mesmerize enemies with his amazing ability to Hula dance. I'm not kidding, Don is an amazing dancer and if enemies were trying to compete with him in a dance competition, they would not stand a chance. In addition to his amazing dance skills, he has many relatives.

His relatives are super sassy, so don't ever mess with Don Gosney. Guantonomo Don, Evil Don, and Flamethower Don are people you don't want to mess with because of their beauty. They are so good-looking that they make Miss Universe bow down.

Finally, Don's car is comparable to the batmobile. He has a pretty sweet ride that can get all the ladies, and the men. Whenever Don's car is in sight, it's like being in a car commercial. His car, beauty, and ability will make him become the best superhero out there. Introducing Don da Bomb.

Don is the Best

Don Gosney is a very dedicated and amazing person. He goes above and beyond for us at the Ivy League Connections. He's been a bit stressed lately because he's working constantly on making sure we get on that plane this summer. This blog is dedicated to him to let him know that he is appreciated and his hardwork does not go unnoticed.
Tickled Pink Don
On the other hand, I tried waking up a bit early this morning so I would have the chance to wash my hair but contrary to my plans, my sleep schedule disagreed with me. I woke up a bit late but was still able to make it to DeAnza high school with five minutes to spare. I dressed up in a tank top and shorts because I was supposed to go to the movies with my sister later on in the day but she bailed on me. I suppose I can just watch a movie at home by myself.

During the tutorial, My friend Thao and I had a blast from the past as we scrolled down our blogs from the previous summers. I can't believe I am able to participate in the Ivy League Connections again this year. I cant wait to see what this summer has in store for me at UPenn.

Wake Up!

This morning I awoke to my screaming mom exclaiming, "Wake up or else you will be late for the ILC blogging tutorial!" Quickly I made my bed and put away all my laundry, later realizing it was the clothes I would be wearing that day. Once in the bathroom, I brushed my teeth and performed my daily routine in getting ready.

With my mom still rushing me out of the house, I flew down the stairs and into the car. Ironically, I ended up waiting for my mom in the car for 10 minutes. However, by the time we left the house the clock only read 8:05 AM.

Upon our arrival of De Anza High School, we witnessed a huge Ivy League Connection banner along a fence. Kissing my mother good bye, I hastily walked through the black gated fence and into the computer lab.

My First Morning Blog

Today has gone off to a rather interesting start. I started off my Saturday morning by awaking to the sound of my beautiful alarm. A few minutes later, I hastily got up out of bed and made my morning breakfast of grilled chicken with rice and a banana. After such a nutritious breakfast, I took my time taking a nice hot shower and changed into my clothes.

I arrived at De Anza at around 8;10AM and met my buddy Stephen in Mr. Gill's room. Once we got started, Don started by explaining his different "relatives" and how to avoid being an idiot. Later into the tutorial, we faced some major technical difficulties as the internet went down for all of our computers. I then recommended to call Mr. Gill himself in hopes that maybe he can help access the issue. We did end up fixing the problem eventually and now here I am typing my first blog and taking a step closer in studying Con Law at Columbia University.

Superman v. Batman

While both have their defining strengths, it is with great confidence that I say that in a hypothetical fight between Batman and Superman, that Superman would always win. While my statement is met with many counterarguments, I believe it is an absolute fact.

There is no way in Jose that Batman, a mere human who happens to have cool gadgets, could ever exterminate such an enitity as Superman. Many argue that Superman could easily be taken out by kryptonite. While this is true, the kryptonite's effect on Superman has a radius limit. There is no way Batman could ever even get close to Superman without being blasted by his lazer vision. Superman has such a variety of superabilities that it is without a doubt that Batman could never even touch him.

Superman posseses

  • flight
  • superhuman strength
  • x-ray vision
  • heat vision
  • cold breath
  • super-speed
  • ehanced hearing
  • nigh-invulnerability.

No one could ever convince me that the Dark Knight could beat the Man of Steel in a physical fight.

One another note, enjoy this struggling cat.
